1932 Essex Terraplane Standard Sedan

History:

The Hudson Motor Car Company was known for producing durable, well engineered but conservatively styled automobiles. That reputation was to be forever changed when the NEW Terraplane models were introduced on July 21st 1932 at a huge outdoor event. The first Terraplane was christened by Amelia Earhart who in May was the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic! On the spot Radio coverage flashed the event to the nation. Topping off the day’s events was a massive dealer driveaway of some 2,000 new Terraplanes which formed a gigantic parade through the streets of Detroit before fanning out to their destinations all over the country!

The 1932 Essex Terraplane featured in this auction was sold new in Southern Indiana and sparingly used. It was traded in to Davis Hudson in Salem, Indiana in about 1950 on a newer Hudson by Tennessee Ernie Ford's cousin Windy Wade. Lee Davis, the owner of the dealership, liked the car and kept it. He made several modifications over the years to include upgrading the car to 1936 Terraplane hydraulic brakes, stepdown Hudson front brakes, Aircraft style modern shock absorbers, an electric fuel pump and other smaller, but all Hudson mods. The 1932 bird hood ornament was replaced with a 1933 Griffin. Lee Davis and this car were on the cover and featured in the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club’s magazine in the November/ December 2004 issue. The 36,142 miles shown on the odometer is believed to be the actual mileage. Lee Davis passed in 2010 and the ownership now lies with his grandson who is in hopes that a new Loving home will be found for the car. It has been in his family for over 60 years! The last picture is of his family in the car in the early 1950’s.

Condition:

This car is a very nicely preserved functional car. You could start driving this car everyday. This car has an interior that was restored many years ago in period material. It is in pretty nice condition. The windshield opens to allow the flow of fresh air and all of other windows work nicely as well. There is a small crack in the driver’s side quarter window. The interior Chrome and dash panels are very nice. The exterior chrome is very nice. I suspect it was rechromed at some point. The car has been repainted at some point and is showing some age, but shines and overall looks great. The car starts right up and drives very nicely. The engine and gearboxes are quiet and smooth. All of the lights and Gauges work, except the gas gauge is intermittent. The water pump drips a little. It has stepdown Hudson wheels and hubcaps. The Modern Radial tires are brand New. This car was recently treated to a mechanical freshening at Wildrick Restorations. The ticket was nearly $8,000!

Details:

This is a Very Presentable original Essex Terraplane Sedan. You can drive this car to Cruise Ins and shows right now. You can get into the Collector car hobby and the Hudson Club with a turnkey car. I believe that this Terraplane sedan can be driven to any destination if you have the time! It is freshly serviced and ready to go.
